Tax Doctor Questions - General Tax Questions Edition.
March 27, 2017
1. Tax Doctor when is the last day to file taxes this year?
The filing deadline to submit 2016 tax returns is Tuesday, April 18, 2017
2. Why isn’t the last day to file April 15th as it usually is?
This year April 15th falls on a Saturday and this would usually move the filing deadline to the following
Monday, April 17th. However, Emancipation Day (a legal holiday in the District of Columbia) will be
observed on that Monday, which pushes the nation’s filing deadline to Tuesday, April 18, 2017. Under the
tax law, legal holidays in the District of Columbia affect the filing deadline across the nation.
3. What happens if I don’t file before the deadline?
Interest and penalties will be charged to your balance due, if you will be receiving a refund you won’t be penalized,
however, you do have 3 years to file.
4. If I don’t have my W-2 what should I do?
You have several options. You may contact your current/previous employer to request your W-2. Or contact the IRS
and ask for an account transcript. You may also request it on irs.gov. Please note the IRS does not show State
withholdings (If you are in a state that has income taxes).
5. If I owe money back and won’t be prepared to file or pay before the deadline what should I do?
You should file an extension. An extension does not exempt you from accruing interest, but it will help minimize the
penalties. File an extension and come see the Tax Doctor to help you through this process prior to 4/18/17.
